Should an emergency arise, please call our office right away. We will be happy to help you in a quick and efficient manner to set up an appointment as soon as possible. Below we have put together some information about the most common emergency issues we have seen in our office.

Tooth Ache

Using warm salt water, clean around the sore tooth meticulously by rinsing your mouth to displace any food trapped between teeth. If you begin to notice some facial swelling, we recommend applying a cold compress to the area. To relieve pain temporarily taking acetaminophen, rather than aspirin, is suggested.

Cut or Bitten Tongue, Lip, or Cheek

If you have cut or bitten your tongue, or other part of your mouth, apply an ice pack to any bruised areas to reduce swelling and pain. If you are experiencing slight bleeding, place firm, but gentle, pressure with sterile gauze or a clean cloth on the open wound. If the bleeding persists or becomes worse after applying pressure for 15 minutes or more, please visit an emergency room.

Broken or Knocked Out Teeth

If you have a broken or knocked out a tooth, immediately rinse the area with warm salt water. For less severe, chipped teeth, put a cold compress over the area of injury and recover any broken tooth fragments, prior to seeking immediate dental attention.

To treat more severe situations, such as knocking out a permanent tooth, make sure to recover the tooth first and foremost and hold it by the crown and not the root. Rinse, but do not clean, the tooth carefully, making sure to handle it as little as possible. Using a clean piece of gauze or cloth, reinsert the tooth into the socket and hold it in place until you have arrived at our Nashua dental office. If the tooth cannot be reinserted, place it in a cup of water or milk to keep it healthy. As time is extremely essential, please contact our office immediately.

Possible Broken Jaw

If you believe you or a loved one has broken or severely injured their jaw, hold the jaw in place by tying the mouth closed with a clean towel or handkerchief. Visit an emergency room immediately to receive professional help.

Bleeding Following a Baby Tooth Falling Out

It is generally normal to experience bleeding after a baby tooth has been pulled or fallen out. To stop the bleeding, fold a clean piece of gauze and place it firmly over the affected area. Bite down on the gauze for 15 minutes or until bleeding has stopped. If bleeding continues, give our office a call.

Cold or Canker Sores

Cold and canker sores are common and often appear when your immune system is weak or compromised. Over the counter medications can provide temporary relief from the pain and can assist in healing the sores. We also recommend staying away from salty or acidic foods, as they may irritate the sore and cause more pain. If the sore persists, visit us for more intensive treatment.
